Great cities need great art-and Opera Colorado has brought world-class opera to Denver and beyond since our founding in 1981. In addition to our mainstage performances at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House each season, we affirm our commitment to the future of the art form by annually presenting new works as part of our Scene Change initiative; with our nationally recognized Artist in Residence Program that trains the next generation of opera performers; and by each year reaching more than 45,000 students and adults through our statewide education and community programs.

Bringing Opera Into the 21st Century With Alan E. Muraoka
Throughout opera’s history, composers, librettists, directors, and artists of all kinds have contributed to this ever-evolving art form. Despite the public perception of opera being a bit stodgy, today’s operatic artists are trying out new and inventive musical styles, developing new stagecraft techniques, and telling new kinds of stories to reflect our diverse and expanding world. Here at Opera Colorado, we want to celebrate the artists pushing the envelope and moving opera’s grand history forward.
For this installment of Opera Innovators, we are delighted to feature Alan E. Muraoka, Set Designer for our 2024 production of The Flying Dutchman. Alan has worked in the entertainment industry as a production designer and art director for film, television, theater, and opera. Alan is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
In February of this year, we presented a brand new production of The Flying Dutchman that brought the legendary tale into the twenty-first century. Learn how Alan worked with the rest of the creative team, especially Director Kathleen Smith Belcher, to translate the mythical story of the Dutchman into something akin to graphic novels, comic books, and superheroes, all while presenting a visual story reminiscent of a North American coastal town.

Opera Colorado closes the season with Saint-Saëns’s operatic take on the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. Samson is a man of super-human strength. Indulge in a performance of stunning visuals, epic dance, and some of opera’s most gorgeously evocative music culminating in a finale t...

A wonderful voice and singer👏👏👏
0:40 What a beautiful and powerful yet haunting harmony
I went to go see it, I don't know why my doctor recommended I go to see an opera for my depression but it kind of didn't work it's actually a really sad play
10:05 Brigitta: "Und wo Liebe. Dort dient eine arme Frau zufrieden." So wonderful... Would have liked to have experienced the performance at the Opera Colorado - Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Beaucoup plus grave mais tout aussi merveilleuse. Félicitations.
Was blessed to see her in this role in Detroit ❤ she’s the preeminent Carmen of her generation.
It's an opera. Why don't we hear them sing?
It's a promotional video so mostly visual and they probably hadn't recorded themselves singing it yet since they were still in rehearsals at the time this was produced.
Brand new Piano Concerto No 2! With various styles such as Romantic, musical theatre, early Modern, Baroque pastiche, fugue, and even a rhumba! Hope to lift your Spring spirits. ua-cam.com/video/0wUWfXRbVV8/v-deo.html Thanks!
Maravillosa!!!
Okay, now Leona Mitchell. Love it!
Znám dva fantastické bratry Hvorostovsky & Ford. 👏🇨🇿
😂😂😂
Mythbusters did this. You need a lower note to break it.
You have to sing at the same exact frequency as the glass without vibratto and get very close to the glass.
This makes me want to become and Opera singer, other than doing broadway just to do The Phantom of the Opera
You need a crystal glass
Great vocals though! Very impressive❤!
I feel like they're going about this wrong. Hold the base with fingertips to let it vibrate as much as possible then sing the note that matches the resonance of the glass.
Reminds me of the "Fat Lady" from HP shattering it.😂❤
Amazing, just with my voice!
Doesn't it have to be upside down to break?
woah bro. my ear drums
This is wonderful. Kevin is a great singer, but who is the pianist?
This must be one of the world's most terrible baritones that I ever heard.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👎🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Good intro!
Why didn’t you guys make more of these videos?
Thanks for this. It brought to mind my plunge down a musicological rabbit hole in '98 from which I've yet to escape. Specifically, is Tracy Chapman's vocal style in "Give Me One Reason" ua-cam.com/video/V6hQ9HSKlIE/v-deo.html ( i.e., multiple notes on one pitch, at conversational rythym, often ending in a two-note glissando) a modern take on recitativo, or parlando, or is there even a name for what she does?
Kate Aldrich is an amazing singer. Opera Colorado was blessed to have her.
🤤 Promo-SM
C'est magnifique!
"PromoSM"
Wonderful! Thank you all so much for this!
why can I not get the sound. Im very upset
No power in your voice, too quiet and sweet, I don't believe you can fight, much less a bull :-) The performance is more like an actor telling about the show he was a part of, not an actual toreador talking from experience :-) Way too sweet, smooth and considerate in general, not heroic
❤😊
Breathtaking rendition!
five nights at freddy’s toreador omg
Attractive voice
Brand new release! A lively piece for full Orchestra and Piano in seven-time, hope to lift your Summer spirits- in seven! ua-cam.com/video/H-lTJFy40qU/v-deo.html Thanks!
I remember listening to this promo over 10 years ago falling into blissful sleep, as it was the perfect way to decompress after a hectic week. Opera is wonderful
Beautiful and moving, …Brava!
Esperando ver tu trabiata en Miami paranoviembre🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Unfortunately the translation is sometimes way off.
Bravo!
Beautiful...thank you!
opera cougar
Brava!!!
I just returned from my very first opera "Turandot" and I absolutely loved it. I was very moved and thrilled with the cast, the set, costumes, the stellar orchestra, and of course the theater. Bravo! I am ready for my next opera!
Everything about this video is splendid. It is not overdone. It flows really well, and Kevin is sensational with his detailed explanations (as always). Props to the entire production team.
You are loved, I miss you. Yeah, it’s me🥰 hi Tom🥰
Maravilloso !!hermosa interpretaciones.
